We bought our Oyster cards and headed out around 11am on the Tube to South Kensington and the amazing Albert and Victoria Museum. We followed much of the tour in our Rick Steves guide book. It was very interesting and the museum is certainly well worth a visit, as indicated by the crowds of people visiting it on a Monday. We only saw a fraction of the place, but it was a great taster. The first photo shows the amazing Dale Chihuly Chandelier in the entrance.
Next we walked down the road to Harrods, anticipating having lunch there. However, it was very crowded and way out of our league (price, menu, sophistication...)! Seating was difficult to come by, and gluten free food was going to cause issues. Instead, we ducked down the street and into an Eat store, very like the Pret a Mangers (that are rather like our Wishbone stores). I had a lovely periperi chicken salad with avocado, and David had the usual bread roll. Then we went back to tour more of Harrods, following Rick Steves' recommendations. We saw more of the mind-boggling food galleries, the Diana and Dody memorial, and travelled up the floors using the amazing and ornate Egyptian Escalator. The toy gallery was huge and busy, and the technology department had some hi-tech and expensive gadgets!
We took the tube, and walked through Trafalgar Square to the National Portrait Gallery. Again, we followed much of a Rick Steves tour (they give such good overviews if you don't have much time). It was interesting to see the portraits of so many famous people and to hear some of the fascinating stories behind these (really) ordinary people.
We wandered along to Leicester Square, and had a drink in the Slug and Lettuce pub (the name took my fancy) - turns out it's just a chain store! The area was very busy!
We caught the tube back to Marble Arch, with me almost not making it onto one train at the last minute as I followed David in - jammed my arm in the doors but managed to squeeze in...
We dined again in the hotel restaurant, feeling much less jet-lagged than last night.
